Belka and Strelka

Korabl-Sputnik-2 (Spaceship Satellite-2), also known as Sputnik 5, was launched on August 19, 1960. On board were the dogs Belka ( Squirrel) and Strelka (Little Arrow). Also on board were 40 mice, 2 rats and a variety of plants.

After a day in orbit, the spacecraft's retrorocket was fired and the landing capsule and the dogs were safely recovered. They were the first living animals to survive orbital flight.

Strelka later gave birth to six puppies, one of which was given to Caroline Kennedy, daughter of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, by Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev.

Today, the bodies of Strelka and Belka remain preserved at the Memorial Museum of Astronautics in Moscow. Belka sits in a glass case in the museum while Strelka is part of a traveling exhibit that has visited the U.S., China, Australia, Israel and other countries.

Franken's first goal: Dogs for vets

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Newly-minted Sen. Al Franken, D-Minnesota, unveiled his first legislative goal Monday — providing funding to train dogs to work with wounded veterans.

"Service dogs … can be of immense benefit to vets suffering from physical and emotional wounds," Franken wrote in a column published in the Star Tribune. "Yes, they provide companionship. But they can also detect changes in a person's breathing, perspiration or scent to anticipate and ward off an impending panic attack with some well-timed nuzzling. They are trained to let their masters know when it's time to take their medication and to wake them from terrifying nightmares."

Franken, who was recently sworn-in after a nine month battle over the election results, said it costs about $25,000 to train and place a dog and noted his bill would provide hundreds of them to veterans.

The Minnesota Democrat also said there is evidence to show that this kind of program could help reduce the suicide rate among veterans.

"Frankly, I believe it is enough simply to improve the lives of those of whom we asked so much," Franken wrote. "But this program isn't just the right thing to do. It's the smart thing to do. This is win, win, win, win. I've been a senator for only a few days. But I've learned that it's better to listen than to talk, that you don't have to be a lawyer to be impressed by a tremendous jurist like Judge Sotomayor, and that I enjoy working with my Republican colleagues as much as I do with my fellow Democrats."

I love it when he comes over, but pissed his care takers just seem to let him out all day.
There is a highway on the end of my street and its kinda dangerous for a dog.
But I do like to see him.

Lazy bums.

I'm so annoyed right now. I saw a Siberian Husky crossing the street in Elysian Park with no collar. I pulled over followed her around the park for 30 minutes until someone finally helped me grab her. I put her on Mimi's leash which i just tied around her neck because the collar was too small to use. I walked her to my car, her ears were all bitten up and she was definitely hungry, but she walked well on a leash. We got to my car but somehow while hitting the unlock button on my keys, she slipped away again. Then she vanished. I'm really pissed about it. I drove around and didn't see her again. I really hate getting so close to helping her out and then just losing her. The funny thing was, apart from the running away, I could tell she liked Mimi and I. All I can keep thinking about is how the leash should have been tied tighter... then she'd be in the yard right now eating a huge bowl of food.



update:

So I went back out with a box of treats and a leash and found the dog almost right away!
Some old woman said "you did a good thing, she has been out here all day"

then another woman passed and was said "she is owned by a guy that lives down the street"

I found the door of the owner, and said I found your dog.

He unthankfully replied "She must have got out earlier when I was moving, do you want to keep her?"

shocked I was like "are you serious?"

He said no, but i don't trust him one bit.

Another dog with no collar on the loose... bitten up ears. A junk yard property with a bunch of dirty dogs sleeping outside.
I guess that's what its like in East LA.

As I was leaving I asked for the dogs name, he had to think for a few seconds too long and said "Kelly"

Max

This adorable purebred Beagle was surrendered to animal control by the only family he knew simply because there was a new baby on the way. When we noticed him we knew we had to have him. But poor Max was kind of shell shocked in the beginning, and still kind of recouping. Who can blame him really? to get dumped just like that? What an awful thing to do to a family member. However, fortunate for him he’s living a much better life now and is adjusting to it pretty quickly. Max's foster parents say the nicest things about him...

I gave him back to his owner again, he's like a 16 year old on a bike with a diamond earring. The kid needs some dog lessons. He's not neutered, it has no collar, and he keeps getting out. Can I just have him?
